However, unlike the anti-virus space, where vendors have reached agreement on certain standards, and share sample collections in order to provide the broadest possible protection to their customers, collaboration is more complex in the anti-spyware space.
The Anti-Spyware Coalition (ASC) is a group dedicated to building a consensus about definitions and best practices in the debate surrounding spyware and other potentially unwanted technologies. ASC and its members have produced excellent documents delineating Terms and Definitions and Risk Modeling that will lay the ground work for discussions on spyware identification/naming, testing, and possible sample sharing. However, it was not evident that at this time these projects fit under the current charter of ASC.
We are currently prototyping several methods of sharing intelligence to allow us to better unify Spyware identification/naming, Anti-Spyware detection and remediation efforts. We are evaluating the Anti-Virus industry’s sample sharing model for its applicability to the Anti-Spyware industry and its needs.

Spyware programs tend to have an increased number of registry entries, files, self-protection mechanisms, and other tools that they employ. While vendors can determine which of these entries can safely be removed, and which should be part of a test suite, it is generally too complex for the end-user.
This makes it difficult for customers wanting to evaluate and compare anti-spyware products on their own to do so.

The newly formed Anti-Spyware Coalition held its first public workshop earlier this month as a way to bring together key players to discuss malicious software, the Cyber Security Industry Alliance said in its February newsletter.
